The above is a 5" x 3/4" metallic cheerball, completely unfluffed.

To fluff cheerballs that are completely unfluffed:
Start with one side of the pom, grabbing small amounts of strands at a time in one hand.  With the other hand, take a one or two strands from the top and gently pull them away and down from you.  Repeat until the entire group of strands is done, then grab another small amount and repeat the process.  Every so often you can give the cheerball a good shake, this will also help to loosen and separate the strands.

Very quickly your cheerball will begin to take shape.  It may take you a few minutes to get the hang of it, but when you do, the results speak for themselves.

FYI:
Metallic cheerballs may "squeak" as you are gently pulling the strands apart.  The closer the strands get to the center of the pom, the more they "squeak".   This is normal and nothing to worry about.

If you look closely at the center of the pom where the metal clip is, you will see that your strands are wrinkled.  This wrinkling is what helps give the pom its' body and isn't noticeable when the pom is fluffed.

FOR WIDE STRAND PLASTIC POMS:
Some of the strands may be wrinkled when they arrive.  These strands will eventually be straightened or enveloped within the pom with little effort. To begin, we suggest you give each pom a good shake and then select strand “bunches” that may not have already been fully separated and fluffed. Separate & spread these strands by using both hands & pulling individual strands outward in opposite directions with a gentle tug. Once this is done, shake the pom again and pluck at it with your fingers, pulling the strands gently outward to achieve an even fullness.

FOR STREAMER POMS (3/16” Width):
Simply grasp a handful of strands and crush lightly and release.  You may also gently rub the strands between your palms but do not over-do this action or your poms will become stringy.  Continue until all strands are fluffed.  CAUTION:  Streamer poms become naturally fuller with use and will lose their flowing look if overly fluffed. Metallic poms may need to be fluffed somewhat more than plastics.

ROOTER POMS:
Simply grasp a handful of strands and crush lightly and release.  You may also gently rub the strands between your palms (but do not over-do this action or your poms will become stringy).  To control static electricity when using this method, use a bit of hand lotion on your hands and reapply every so often.
